Snow-Scooter trip from Branäs to Treriksröset (2021)

From Branäs to Treriksröset in eight days: “We wanted a bit of a challenge”

The friends told them that it was impossible to go that far north by scooter. And Johan and his son Samuel Johansson from Ödsmål were not slow to accept the challenge. Now, together with two others, they have driven from Branäs to Treriksröset on snowmobiles in eight days.

Four guys on four snowmobiles accepted the challenge to go to Treriksröset on snowmobiles. On Thursday, they reached their goal, eight days after they started from Ambjörby in Branäs.

Why are you doing this?

– We do it to get a bit of a challenge and because we had nothing else to do, says Johan Johansson on the phone from Kiruna on Thursday evening.

In addition, they wanted to take advantage of when his son Samuel still had time off.

As I said, the whole adventure started early on Thursday morning last week in Ambjörby and then continued across Sälen and to Idre where they spent the first night. Then they went on to Lofsdalen and Funäsdalen.

The overnight stays have been in hotels booked on the same day. Then it went on to Vålådalen and then over to Åre.

– We had dinner there and then drove on towards Lake Åkesjön. That day we drove 42 miles.

Drove over Sarek

Further towards Gäddede, Slussfors and Borgafjäll and Saxnäs.

– And then we went over Sarek, it was fantastically beautiful, and down to Stora Sjöfallet.

During the trip, they followed the snowmobile tracks up in the mountains. When they were at Gäddede, 80 centimeters of fresh snow had fallen and it was sometimes difficult to track.

– But even the scooter sign was bad in places. But we were able to orientate ourselves with our maps and trudged along the route.

Both Johan and Samuel compete at an elite level with jet skis and have done some freestyle skiing with snowmobiles but have never been this far north before.

– It has been physically demanding, we have been sitting on the scooter for 10 and 12 hours a day.

Minus 38 in Nikkaloukta

On Thursday, they started in a -38 degree cold Nikkaloukta to reach Treriksröset in the afternoon. But when there was a ban on scooters, they had to walk the last bit.

– It was freezing cold but very bright and nice, says Johan Johansson.

Now they are back in Kiruna and have loaded the scooters on a trailer and tomorrow morning, Friday, the trip goes back down to Branäs.

Round of Sweden Jet ski trip (2022)

Johan Johansson is back home after an adventurous holiday: He has jet skied along the entire coast of Sweden. This corresponds to 48 pieces of “Tjörn runt”.

Together with three friends, Johan Johansson has just finished an unusually busy holiday trip. In nine days they made it around the entire coast of Sweden, from Haparanda in the north to Strömstad in the west.

– I have spoken to the others and everyone is completely exhausted, says Johan Johansson and still looks quite happy.

He has put around 1,600 nautical miles, equivalent to 256 miles on land, behind him on the jet ski.

At 4 in the morning on Sunday July 3, the group started their jet ski trip from Haparanda. On Tuesday July 12 at two o’clock in the afternoon, they finally arrived in Strömstad.

– There was a large group that welcomed us with champagne on the pier.

Tough weather

On the Facebook group “Sweden around 2022 jet skis” you could follow the course of events. It was not an easy ride.

– You can’t do much about the weather, continues the scooter driver from Ödsmål.

– We had more headwinds than expected.

Along the Skåne coast, for example, there was a storm in the headwind. The scooter buddies broke off the journey from Malmö, after five hours of being washed away by water in the high waves, and landed in Torekov.

– But the mood in the group was fantastic. We didn’t feel any worries. Nobody has complained, not even when it rained, says Johan Johansson, who assures that they had a lot of fun on the trip.

Great fun!

– We had great fun! One thing or another happens. We have also been treated very nicely. Everywhere people have asked a lot of questions about the trip.

However, some have wondered how much fuel was used. The answer to that question is that the four jet skis together consumed 5,800 liters of petrol on the entire route.

– We had to bring extra cans on the scooters to be able to fill up where there were no gas stations.

Support from land

A truck accompanied the group as a follow-up vehicle using GPS. It had to drive 450 miles to meet them at the ports.

– We had planned to sleep in a hotel, but it was not possible to calculate how far we would have to travel each day, so we mostly slept on mattresses in the escort car, explains Johan Johansson.

The longest day leg went from Gävle to Västervik, 270 nautical miles in 12-13 hours. Then you still had time to eat lunch in Vaxholm.

Next time?

The idea for the adventure was sparked after the group’s previous adventure trip. In the winter of 2021, they rode snowmobiles all the way from Värmland to Treriksröset.

– The question of what the next adventure will be has come up. But nothing is decided yet. There will probably be something with a motor in any case, on the water, on two wheels or four wheels, believes Johan Johansson.
